Variety Characteristics:
Valor is a vigorous main crop variety with very high yield potential, excellent storage characteristics and can endure washing and shipping stress while reroute to retail destinations. 

Numerous round oval, large bright white fleshed tubers suited for fresh consumption are produced on each plant. Unique disease resistance characteristics for Valor includes: High resistance to golden nematode Ro1 and tolerance to pale cyst nematodes Pa2/3, common scab, bruising and Black leg.  A standard North American management program for late blight is recommended however Valor has demonstrated resistance to some strains in the field. Valor is rather susceptible to PVY.

Valor is widely adapted and has demonstrates a high degree of environmental heat stress tolerance.

Seed Preparation:
Cold seed should be warmed to 10-15°C (50-60°F) to minimize bruising during handling.  Pre-warming may be necessary depending on the planting date, as Valor has a deep dormancy. Valor can successfully be pre-cut. Optimum cut seed sizes are 50-gram (2 oz) or larger. 

Planting:
Valor responds best when soil temperatures are at or above 7°C (45°F). Seed piece depth should be 5-8 cm (2-3") under most conditions in well drained soils.  Plant spacing of 30 cm (12") for cut seed and approximately 35 cm (14") for whole seed.

Cultivation:
Valor requires a regular nitrogen fertilization. A  knowledge of field nitrogen will be helpful in determining levels of nitrogen to apply. Base  Phosphorous and Potassium application levels on soil analysis data. Herbicides containing metribuzin can be used; always follow label recommendations for soil type and conditions. Valor gives good results on well drained soils. It will emerge quickly and develop a good ground covering foliage.

Harvest and Storage:
The variety has a determinate growth habit and has not demonstrated problems with vine destruction when grown with appropriate Nitrogen applications.  Valor is not susceptible to internal bruising or to mechanical damage. It will store if properly handled, cured and ventilated. Apply a treatment of the fungicide thiabendazole to control fusarium and silver scurf. Avoid free moisture in storage and keep potatoes at a consistent temperature. Optimum storage and packing results can be realized over an extended table potato shipping season.
